Description

PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter, 323-283 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (16.90 gms), Byblos Mint, ca. 320/19-315 B.C. NGC MS, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5. Overstruck.

HGC-10, 1003 (Berytos); Pr-3412. Struck in the name and types of Alexander III 'the Great' of Macedon. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, O above B; below throne, AI below strut. This issue is seen in a condition that is exceedingly RARE, given how much these types circulated. Strong details are impressed in high relief on a lustrous and argent flan that sparkles. Only hints of the undertype remain, and this touch of uniqueness adds to the desirability of the issue.
