POLAND. Danzig. Ducat, 1688/6. Danzig Mint. John III Sobieski. PCGS MS-62.
Fr-36; KM-75.1; H-C-2503 (R2); Kop-7693 (R3); Gum-2046. Beautiful and SCARCE, this Danzig product is highly lustrous and beaming with irradiance that cartwheels light. A slightly soft strike, but still a top example with only one ever certifying better from PCGS. Produced during the reign of John III who stabilized the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after years of tumult. Today remembered as a defender of Christendom by defeating the Ottoman Turks, his stately portrait is embellished with what appears to be the Order of Janina which he created two year prior. Some light marking is noted in the fields, but not enough to detract significantly from the wonder of this piece.
