Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.06 gms), struck under Gelon I, ca. 480-475 B.C. NGC VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Edge Marks.

HGC-2, 1306; Boehringer-165 (V72/R114); SNG ANS-49 (same dies). Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga right; above, crowning Nike flying right; Reverse: Diademed head of Arethousa right; four dolphins around. Some die deterioration is noted, but this pleasantly toned specimen nevertheless features a well centered strike.
