Description

ITALY. Lucania. Metapontion. AR Stater (Nomos) (8.09 gms), ca. 540-510 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Edge Marks, Scuff.

HGC-1, 1027; Noe-140.2 (this coin cited); HN Italy-1481. Obverse: Ear of barley with seven grains; Reverse: Incuse ear of barley with seven grains. Exceptional quality for the type, this lustrous example presents gunmetal gray toning with some burnished iridescence accentuating the devices. The few noted flaws are fairly inconsequential and do not distract from all that is offered here.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: Vicomte de Sartiges Collection, # 31. Ex: J. Hirsch XI (5/1904), Lot # 40.
