ITALY. Calabria. Tarentum. AR Didrachm (Nomos) (7.85 gms), ca. 450-425 B.C. NGC Ch F, Strike: 3/5 Surface: 3/5. Edge Marks.
HGC-1, 758; Vlasto-185 (same obv. die); HN Italy-844; Fischer-Bossert-171 (V83/R120). Obverse: Taras riding dolphin right, with both arms outstretched; cockle shell below; Reverse: Oecist seated left, holding distaff and scepter. A good example of a tougher-to-find early Tarentum Didrachm, this piece has gunmetal gray surfaces with just a hint of porosity. The strike quality is average to slightly above average, and the centering is very good. Despite the noted edge marks and clear evidence of circulation, these early pieces are difficult to find in any condition.
