Description

CANADA. Dominion of Canada. 1 Dollar, 1870. DC-2a. PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ.

Payable at Montreal. Printed by BABN. Small date variety. Signature combination of Dickinson & Harington. Jacques Cartier is depicted at left while an octagonal design encasing a "1" counter is found at right. At center is a helmeted allegorical woman with shield over watching over "CANADA" on the globe while a cherub is found at right. This lovely example retains fully original paper, as evidenced by PMG's EPQ qualifier. The design details stand out in dark black ink whilst the underprints are found in a forest green color. The reverse of the note depicts the "Payable At" location at center showcased within an intricate dark green design. PMG Pop 1/None Finer. Jacques Cartier was a French explorer whom was the first European to explore inland North America. Cartier described and mapped the Gulf of Saint Lawrence along with the shores of the river, which he claimed as a territory of France under the title "The Country of the Canadas." Cartier made three successful voyages to North America during his lifetime, with each voyage discovering more land to add under France's new colony.
