Confederate Bond. Ball 341. Cr. 161. Issued March 27th, 1865. $5000.
Rarity 8. Imprint of Evans & Cogswell, Columbia, S.C. This example has interestingly been issued for $5,007 dollars to a Thomas Malcomb on March 27th, 1865. Not many examples of this type were issued, with Ball & Simmons book Comprehensive History of Confederate Bonds reporting around 15 probably issued, with only three reported today, all of which are various denominations. This example is unreported in the book, and is presumed unique for the denomination as the $5,000 variety (or rather, $5,007) is not listed. The section on the reverse has not been filled out. Pinholes, ink burns and internal fold tears are noticed. The signature of Witherspoon, Register of the Treasury, is found in blue ink whilst the rest of the penmanship is in typical brown ink of the era. We cannot validate the signature on this item, and therefor this item is being sold as is, with no returns offered.
From the Q. David Bowers Collection.
