Description

1868 Octagonal 25 Cents. BG-799S. Rarity-7+. Indian Head. MS-64 (PCGS).

This pretty near-Gem exhibits wisps of pale rose-apricot iridescence to otherwise golden-honey surfaces. Semi-reflective fields support satiny design elements, both sides boldly to sharply struck throughout. This rare variety was discovered by David or Susan Doering sometime between 1968 and 1980. It is a backdated issue attributed to Christopher (Christoph) Ferdinand Mohrig and was probably struck circa 1881 to 1883. The 2003 Bob Leonard census accounts for only four specimens, although we are aware of one other that appeared in our (American Numismatic Rarities') Frog Run Farm Collection sale of December 2004. Highly significant, and worthy of the strongest bids.

PCGS# 10645. NGC ID: 2BS8.

PCGS Population: 5; 0 finer.

From the Oregon Collection.
