Description

Fr. 355. 1890 $2 Treasury Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.

Just a little over 130 examples of this elusive Friedberg number are known to collectors, according to Track and Price's census. This Rosecrans-Nebeker signed deuce displays the coveted small red scalloped treasury seal. This plate B example offered here displays vivid cherry red overprints on fresh paper. PMG comments "Exceptional Embossing" on this lofty Ornate Back Deuce. The portrait of General James McPherson is prominently portrayed at right, whom was the second highest ranking Union officer killed during the Civil War. McPherson was killed during the Battle of Atlanta, facing the army of John Bell Hood, his old West Point Classmate. McPherson unknowingly rode toward Confederate Skirmishers, thinking it was his old battle line, and instead of surrendering when given the chance, wheeled his horse around and was mortally wounded by a shot to the back. General Sherman openly wept when given the news about his fellow Generals death. PMG Pop 3/none finer.

Estimate: $50000.00 - $75000.00
