Obverse: Fleeing criminal to right, sword coming from clouds to left, LA PROVIDENCIA PERSIGUE EL CRIMEN around, date below; Reverse: Liberty with youth and baby, radiant sun right, within legend LOS EMPLEADOS DE POTOSI at top and AL PRESIDENTE . M. Y. BELZU at bottom. A nicely struck and lightly toned example of the type.
The inspiration for this unusual piece (a fleeing criminal) was the attempted assassination of Belzu on 6 September, 1850.
