Description

1803 Draped Bust Half Dime. LM-1. Rarity-6. Small 8. VF Details--Scratch (PCGS).

Deep, multicolored iridescence decorates each side of this fully original early half dime. The detail is suitably bold, leaving plenty with which to appreciate the finer elements of this highly elusive die marriage. A couple of vertical ancient scratches are noted on the reverse on and above the shield. The diagnostic of this obverse die is of course, the Small 8 in the date, which is considerably smaller than the 8 seen on the other die for 1803. Precious few of the Small 8 variety are known today, and the total number seen is in the 20 to 30 range. Hence, any example of the Small 8 obverse is highly desirable as variety collectors seek these rare issues to complete their collections. Here is an opportunity to finally secure this rarity for one specialist.

PCGS# 4270.

From our (Stack's) sale of the Winter Collection, January-February 1974, lot 1222. Lot tag included.

Estimate: $3’000.00
