German Empire and Later
GERMANY. Empire. Colonel General Hans Hartwig von Beseler Silver Medal, 1914. Grunthal (Berlin) Mint. PCGS MATTE SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield.
Zetzmann-4035. Diameter: 34mm. By R. Kuechler. The "Conqueror of Antwerp." Obverse: Uniformed bust facing slightly right, head slightly let; Reverse: Nude soldier, with head left and holding branch and flag, advancing right; cityscape in background. Tied with just one other example for the finest graded in the PCGS census (a medal which we offered in our February 2020 CCO [lot 70645] and which realized a total of $240), this matte specimen stands as a rather alluring near-Gem and sports a delightful gunmetal gray color.
