Description

Louis XVI to Napoleon III (1774-1870)

FRANCE. Napoleon III/International Exposition in Paris Tin Medal, 1855. CHOICE UNCIRCULATED.

Collignon-1686. Diameter: 50mm; Weight: 48.52 gms. By Caque & Massonnet. Obverse: Bare head left; Reverse: Perspective view of the Palais de l'industrie. Edge : Plain. Deeply toned surfaces, with a charming pull away nature more noted on the obverse and some underlying luster peeking through; some hints of cobalt and magenta highlight the reverse. Visited by over five million attendees, the Paris expo in 1855 was focused upon agriculture, industry, and the arts. Of note, Napoleon III, still somewhat new as Emperor of the French at the time of the expo, called for a classification of France's best Bordeaux, whereby they would be ranked by the reputation of the producing chateau and trading price of the wine--aspects which don't exactly comport today.

Estimate: $100.00 - $150.00
