Liberty Head Eagle
1853-O Liberty Head Eagle. AU-55 (NGC).
A sharp and lustrous example with scattered bronze patina that is richer near the borders. Visually pleasing for a lightly circulated Southern gold coin from the pre-Civil War era. With a mintage of 51,000 coins, the 1853-O is the third most plentiful New Orleans Mint eagle behind the 1847-O and 1851-O. However, the vast majority of survivors are concentrated at the VF and EF grade levels, often with surface problems. This issue is a major rarity in Mint State, and even Choice AU survivors are very scarce and seldom encountered. With above average eye appeal, this NGC AU-55 is among the finer 1853-O eagles that we have handled in recent memory and is sure to appeal to advanced Southern gold collectors.
