Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
1855-C Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-58 (NGC).
A bright and appealing piece, this near-Mint Charlotte quarter eagle is aglow with even green-khaki color. Handling marks are mostly small, wispy and easily overlooked -- a rare attribute in a lightly worn survivor of a Charlotte Mint issue. Sharply struck over the obverse portrait, the reverse exhibits the often-seen softness of detail to the lower portion of the eagle. Produced to the extent of just 3,677 pieces, the 1855-C is the second-rarest Charlotte Mint Two-and-a-Half in terms of total number of coins believed extant (this ranking is per Doug Winter, Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861, 2008 edition ).
