1774 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 5.1-74A, W-7760. Rarity-4. GEORGIVS III, Group I. VF-25 (PCGS).

109.0 grains. A better date in the Machin's Mills series represented by three die varieties that all range from very scarce to rare. This strong example has little actual wear, but is rather weakly struck at the centers and the dark olive and steel surfaces are microscopically porous. Some very fine scratches at the central reverse are the only marks. This is the late die state of the variety, where the top of the uppermost leaf in George's wreath and the stop between III and REX have been lapped away. This die state was formerly referred to as 8-74A, but has been revised to 5.1-74A in the new book on the series by Howes, Rosen, and Trudgen.
