Presidents and Inaugurals
"1841" (1886) William Henry Harrison Presidential Medal. By George T. Morgan. Julian PR-7, var. Silver. MS-64 (NGC).
76 mm. A rare and exciting offering for the specialist in this popular U.S. Mint medal series. Satiny pewter-gray surfaces exhibit a fine grain sandblast texture when examined with the aid of a loupe. Pale iridescent gold and powder blue highlights are evident as the surfaces dip into a light, the protected areas around the reverse periphery with bolder olive tinting. A light mark in the right obverse field seems to be the only impediment to a full Gem Mint State grade. Unlisted in silver in the Julian reference on U.S. Mint medals, we have only handled one other in this metallic composition in recent memory: a lightly cleaned example that appeared (but did not sell) as lot 6249 in our (Stack's) January 2011 New York Americana Sale. Clearly this piece is far finer, and its offering in this sale represents a fleeting opportunity not to be missed.
