Counterstamps
No 2 / PATENT / 257 / (EAGLE) on an 1816 Matron Head large cent. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin About Good.
A very early patent stamp. Unfortunately the early patent records were destroyed by fire in December of 1836 and only a few thousand of the prior 46 years of patents were able to be saved. Still a great piece of U.S. history!
