Counterstamps

W.H. TALLMADGE on an 1841 Braided Hair large cent. Brunk T-55, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Good.

William H. Tallmadge (1813-1888) was a merchant operating in Poughkeepsie, NY throughout the 1850s and 1860s. He was also served as an alderman from the 1st ward in 1854-55. He was a member of the American Art-Union, joining in 1849. There is a miniature portrait known of him from 1841, the year of his marriage to Isabella Montgomery. Brunk reports several examples on large cents of other dates and on one 2 reales.
