Counterstamps

G J. STIVERS on an 1876-S Liberty Seated half dollar. Brunk S-993, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Good.

Dr. Gideon Julius Stivers (1839-1899) was a dentist located in Louisville, KY at 5 th and Walnuts Streets from the 1860s through the 1890s. Up until at least 1861, he was located in Shelbyville, KY. He served in the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant, Company D of the Ninth Kentucky Calvary. On April 4 th, 1899 he was found drowned in the river, evidently due to his second, but this time successful, suicide attempt.
