John C. Schwartz (1822-1892) was born in Germany, emigrating to the United states when he was young. He was a saw maker and filer working in Maine in the 1840s to 1880s. He is listed in the 1849 New England Business Directory under Saw Manufacturers (wood saws) and as working in Medford, ME. In the 1865 edition he is under Saw Filing and Setting and located in Lime and Portland, ME. Brunk gives no information as to the issuer and lists only one example reported, this 1848 large cent.
