N. CODY in a box punch on a 1800s Draped Bust large cent. Brunk C-662, Rulau-Mass 695. Host coin Good.
According to Brunk, Nathanial Cody (1782-1852) was a blacksmith and machinist working in Webster, MA and was a relative of "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Webster is a small town south of Worcester, near the Connecticut border. According to Rulau, these stamps emanated from the 1847-1852 time period. Although this may be true, it is likely that Cody worked much earlier, as he would have been 65 in 1847! At least seven pieces have been reported with this stamp.
