Description

Counterstamps

L. KUNZ on an 1849 Braided Hair large cent. Brunk K-349, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine.

Although listed in Brunk, no attribution is given. This is the stamp of Leonard Kunz (sometimes spelled Kuntz), a carpenter working at 1428 Apple and Lawrence Streets in Philadelphia, PA. He is listed in the city directories starting in 1860. He is still listed as a carpenter on the 1880 Federal census. This is the only known example and the one listed in the Brunk reference.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.

Estimate: $ 150
