FELSHAW (retrograde) on a 1830s Matron Head large cent. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin About Good.
An interesting stamp, there are few if any others that are retrograde like this. Obviously there was a purpose behind it, but it is unknown at this point. According to Sellers (2008), this is the mark of Jerome Felshaw (1834-1894) who was a gunsmith working in Constableville, NY from 1858 to 1874. Currently this is a unique example.
From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection. Purchased from Dick Grinolds.
