Counterstamps

RICHMOND three times in a box punch on an 1819 Matron Head large cent. Brunk R-270, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Fine.

Franklin Richmond (1792-1869) was a silversmith, watch-maker and jeweler working in Providence, RI from 1819 to 1858. He is listed in the 1824 city directory as a watch-maker and jeweler, located at 17 Market, 14 High Streets. His address in the 1836-37 directory is 43 Market, Washington and he is listed as a watch-maker. The 1844 directory only lists a home address of 51 Mathewson Street and no occupation. This is one of only two examples reported in Brunk, both large cents.
