Description

Counterstamps

G.W. LAUGHLIN on an 1831 Capped Bust half dollar O-101. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine.

George Washington Laughlin (1842-1901) worked as a jeweler and watchmaker in both Cleveland and Canton, OH from 1879 to 1901. From 1893 until his death, he was working under the name of LAUGHLIN CO. In 1882 he was listed in the city directory at 591 St. Clair St. in Cleveland and in the 1888 directory at 11 N. Walnut St. Canton, OH. He was also (apparently) the Massillon, Ohio jeweler who also issued an extremely rare Civil War token. Massillon is just eight miles from Canton ( See Fuld 535Ba-1b ). His use of an early half dollar to apply his mark on, shows that these half dollars were still in circulation as late as the 1880's.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection. Purchased from Mike Marker.

Estimate: $ 200
