Counterstamps
IM in a box punch on a 1792-Mo-FM Mexican 2 Reales. Brunk M-31, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine.
Brunk does not positively identify this stamp, but gives several possibilities. However, when comparing known marks, it is apparent this is the mark of Joseph Moulton (1744-1816) who along with many other family members, worked as a silversmith at his home and shop on State Street in Newburyport, MA. His work commenced circa 1764 and he retired in 1810. He was the silversmith master to his four sons who all became silversmiths. He partnered with Theophilus Bradbury around 1796 in the firm of MOULTON & BRADBURY, located on Merrimack Street. Brunk lists three other dates reported on this denomination, but not this one.
