Counterstamps
W.H. HAMMOND in a serrated box punch on an 1854 Liberty Seated quarter. Brunk H-177, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine to Very Fine.
Unidentified as to an issuer in Brunk, this is most likely the circa 1850s/1860s mark of a silversmith or some other worker in metal, due to the size and shape of the stamp. Ripe for research where some time spent with city directories of the time period should reap some reward. One such possibility is a William H. Hammond, a watchmaker working in New York City circa 1853/54.
