Description

World Coins

Great Britain. 1838 Sovereign. Spink-3852. AU-50 (NGC).

A minimally circulated, predominantly lustrous example with vivid medium gold patina. Sure to appeal to collectors of U.S. coinage, a great attraction of this coin is its provenance. Shipwreck coins have become a dynamic specialty in recent years, and the front matter in the Guide Book of United States Coins devotes a section to them. The 2008 book by Dave Bowers, The Treasure Ship S.S. New York, Her Life and Loss, 1837-1846, tells this vessel's story in fascinating detail.

Ex S.S. New York.

Estimate: $ 1000
