Description

Pattern and Experimental Coins

1870 Pattern Dime. Judd-865, Pollock-954. Rarity-7+. Aluminum. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 (PCGS). OGH.

Obv: Standard Silver design with a bust of Liberty facing right. Liberty is wearing a diadem, and her hair is tied in a bun. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is on a scroll below and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the border. The D in GOD is noticeably doubled due to repunching. Rev: A wreath of corn and cotton surrounds the denomination 10 CENTS with the inscription STANDARD SILVER above and the date 1870 below. Lovely silver-gray surfaces are reflective in the fields with a satiny texture to the design elements. Fully struck throughout. Per uspatterns.com, fewer than half a dozen examples of Judd-865 are extant in all grades. This is our first offering for the type that we can recall, and an important bidding opportunity for the advanced pattern enthusiast.

PCGS# 61109.

PCGS Population: three in all grades and categories: Proof-65; Proof-66 Cameo; Proof-66+ Cameo.

Estimate: $ 1500
