Description

Indian Peace Medals

Very Scarce Grant Peace Medal in Bronze

1871 Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal. Julian IP-42, Prucha-53. Bronzed Copper. MS-65 BN (NGC).

64 mm. Light olive-brown and reddish-tan surfaces are uniform throughout and beautifully preserved. Slightly satiny in the fields as usual, and very attractive. Just a couple of tiny marks are detected, mostly requiring magnification. Virtually a twin to the Larry Ness specimen sold by us in our November 2020 sale. While clearly not issued for presentation to Native Americans, there has been a thriving collector market for the various bronze Peace medals, particularly when in high grade as seen here. In fact, bronzes like this are considerably scarcer than the originals in silver and frequently are more aesthetically pleasing! This example is new to the market, having apparently been purchased by the owner of a Colorado antique store decades ago.

Estimate: $ 2500
