CENTRAL AMERICA
A Dazzling Representative
COSTA RICA. Central American Republic. 2 Escudos, 1835-CR F. San Jose Mint. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield.
KM-15; Fr-3. Mintage: 5,452. Immediately breathtaking, the vibrant sparkling luster absolutely dominates the appearance of this classically designed Latin American gold issue. More intense inspection shows that the fields, which possess a naturally pebbled texture, account for much of radiance, with no signs of past handling that divert attention. The strike is also admirable, with the denomination and ceiba tree that comprise the central reverse appearing uncommonly crisp, while the mountain chain on opposite side is similarly bold. Largely a product of the dies that struck this piece (either due to shallow engraving or die deterioration), the facial detail on the sun is softened with limited visible features. Overall, clearly one of the finest that survive of this date, ranking as the sole finest graded by PCGS with a single higher graded example, a MS-64, appearing in the NGC census.
