Description

DARK AGES

OSTROGOTHS. Theoderic, as King of the Goths, 474/5-493. AV Tremissis (1.37 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 490-491. NGC AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5.

Metlich-2. Struck in the name of Byzantine Emperor Zeno. Obverse: Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right; Reverse: Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath and globus cruciger; COMOB. A fairly SCARCE type from early in the reign of Theoderic, this example imitates the types more commonly seen from Zeno. While issues imitating Anastasius are readily encountered, this specimen stands as quite difficult. Well centered and struck, with a good deal of brilliance remaining as well.

Estimate: $500.00- $750.00
