Shield Nickel
1871 Shield Nickel. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC.
Pretty iridescent reddish-gold toning enhances frosty luster on both sides, the patina a bit bolder in the center of the reverse than elsewhere. Fully struck -- a rare attribute in a circulation strike nickel five-cent piece of this design type -- with exceptionally well preserved surfaces. The key date 1871 was produced to the extent of just 561,000 pieces, and with most contemporary collectors opting for examples of the year's Proof issue few Mint State examples were set aside. This upper end Gem would serve as a highlight in the finest set of this 19th century minor coin series.
