Vermont Copper
1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape. RR-2, Bressett 1-A, W-2005. Rarity-3. VERMONTS. VF Details--Corrosion (NGC).
133.7 grains. An overall sharply defined example selected by our consignor to represent the early-to-mid die state of the RR-2 variety. The obverse break, so prominent on the late die state PCGS VF-25 coin offered above, is in a far earlier state here and consists of only a thin crack from the lower border, bisecting the right side of the digit 8 in the date, and extending into the plow. Otherwise medium golden-brown surfaces exhibit intermingled blushes of steel-brown that are mostly confined to the protected areas around the design elements. The strike is a bit tight to the right, the letters in PUBLICA soft and/or running off the flan, many letters in STELLA on the reverse also soft. Several thin planchet fissures in the center and at the upper right of the obverse as are made. The NGC qualifier concerns generally light pitting overall that becomes more pronounced in isolated areas, such as at the letters MA in DECIMA on the reverse. A curiously glossy texture to both sides points to an attempt to "improve" the coin's appearance by lessening the effects of the corrosion. Even so, however, the eye appeal is quite strong, and especially so relative to the assigned grade. With so much detail remaining, in fact, this is a more than respectable example of the type, die variety, and die state that is sure to find many willing buyers.
