Oak Tree Shilling
1652 Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-1, Salmon 1-A, W-430. Rarity-3. IN at Left. VF Details--Repaired (PCGS).
64.0 grains. Relatively bold detail to the tree's branches above the trunk, a sharp denomination and fully legible date are among the strong suits for this more affordable Oak Tree shilling. The peripheral inscriptions are mostly legible, including a bold IN at the left obverse, mentionable softness confined to the right borders on both sides. The reverse exhibits a peripheral scrape at 8 o'clock, prominent pit to the right of the date, but otherwise there are no sizeable distractions. Curiously glossy in texture, the surfaces show evidence of tooling and, below the branches of the tree on the obverse, attempted re-engraving that help to explain the PCGS qualifier. Noe-1 is one of the more obtainable die varieties of the Oak Tree shilling, examples popular for type purposes at all levels of preservation.
