Numismatic Artwork
Lithographic reproduction of Frank H. Taylor's adaptation of "Ye Olde Mint." AO-227. Glass fronted frame. Choice About Uncirculated.
The print area itself measures approximately 11 inches x 8.5 inches, the frame 18.5 inches x 16 inches. Matted. Multiple copies of this lithograph are included in the Frank H. Stewart Collection at Rowan University. A handsome sepia-toned rendition of this iconic image from the history of the United States Mint. Nicely preserved and attractively framed. Scholars Joel J. Orosz and Leonard D. Augsburger's point out in their 2011 book The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint that this iconic scene by Edwin Lamasure, Jr. was not an historically accurate portrayal, but represents an amalgamation of idealized perspectives and architecture. The authors remark that "the tableau Lamasure painted strongly suggests that the first Mint was located, not in bustling downtown Philadelphia, at all, but rather some bucolic address in rural Pennsylvania."
From the Collection of Leonard Augsburger, co-author of The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint.
