Numismatic Artwork
1985 painted copy of "Ye Olde Mint" by Natalie House, titled "Our First Mint." Oil on canvas. AO-211. Framed. Essentially As Made.
24 inches x 36 inches. This beautiful copy was executed under the commission of Craig Whitford, and first appeared in his October 1995 sale of Mint memorabilia. It was later used for post cards. An outstanding representation of this classic of American numismatic art. This copy is based on an original watercolor painted circa 1913 by Philadelphia-born artist Edwin Lamasure, Jr. (1867-1916), who is most well known for his landscapes. This painting cemented his association with America's monetary system, though it might be said that it had always been part of his heritage. His father Edwin, Sr. was an employee of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from 1877 until his death in 1910, as was his brother Frank from 1896 until his death in 1938. Edwin, Jr. himself worked at the BEP for a short period of time in 1884 and 1885, but left to pursue a career in engraving and painting. Over the ensuing century, Ye Olde Mint has become one of the most famous and recognizable depictions of our early minting facilities, offering a nostalgic and fantastical glimpse at the formative years of our nation.
