Sutler Tokens
Illinois. 97th Illinois Volunteers. Undated (1861-1865) S. Whited & Co. 5 Cents. Schenkman IL-97-5B (IL-P5B), Whitman-IL-400-005b. Rarity-6. Brass. Plain Edge. MS-63 (NGC).
17 mm. Pretty pinkish-gold undertones backlight dominant brassy-gold patina on both sides of this exceptionally well preserved example. Satiny surfaces are hard and tight with universally bold striking detail throughout the design. S. Whited & Co. is one of the more frequently encountered sutlers in numismatic circles, but few of their tokens are as nice as this Choice Mint State piece.
