Description

Civil War Store Cards
Ohio--Cincinnati. 1862 Vanaken Wunder. Fuld-165GC-3b. Brass. Plain Edge. EF-45 (PCGS).
19 mm. An exciting offering for the specialist, brass strikings from these dies are unlisted in the 2014 edition of the Fuld reference on Civil War store cards. Richly original surfaces are boldly toned in antique brassy-gold, both sides with wisps of flint gray that are mostly confined to the protected areas around the design elements. Boldly to sharply defined throughout with wispy handling marks scattered about, none of which are worthy of individual attention. This merchant's name as listed on the token -- VAN WUNDER -- was once thought to be a surname. It has since been determined that Vanaken Wunder was a butcher who lived at 102 Findlay Street, Cincinnati.
Estimate: $4000
