Description

Early American and Betts Medals
1780 Admiral George Brydges Rodney, Spanish Defeated Medal. Betts-Unlisted, BHM-225, var., Milford-Haven 378, var. Silver. Specimen-61 (PCGS).
23.5 mm. 86.8 grams. Obv: Uniformed bust of Rodney right with the inscription ADMIRAL RODNEY around the periphery. Rev: Circular wreath encloses the inscription ACTIVE / BRAVE / VICTORIOUS with the date 1780 below in exergue. Lustrous satin surfaces are lightly toned in pretty iridescent gold and pearl gray patina. One of the Royal Navy's most famous commanders, George Brydges Rodney is best known for his commands during the American Revolutionary War. The date of the present medal likely refers to one or both of Rodney's victories over the Spanish in 1780: the Auction of 8 January 1780 fought off Cape Finisterre and the Battle of Cape St. Vincent fought off the southern coast of Portugal on January 16, 1780. An intriguing type for the specialist.
Estimate: $1500
