Early American and Betts Medals
1599 Capture of St. Tomas / Victories of the Argo Medal. Betts-20, Van Loon I, 519. Copper. EF-45 (PCGS).
29.1 mm. This warmly toned copper-brown example is sharply defined overall with the design fully appreciable. Isolated portions of the denticulation are absent from less-than-perfect centering, although this feature is mentioned solely for accuracy. Also easily forgiven is moderate roughness to the texture, as there are no marks or other singularly distracting blemishes. The obverse inscription EN ALTERA QVAE VEHAT ARGO (see what the second Argo carries) likens the Dutch sailors to Jason's Argonauts from Greek mythology.
