MEXICO. War of Independence. Guerrero. Real, ND. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, Poor/Fair Details Gold Shield; Countermark: VF Details.
KM-277 (Incorrect on PCGS holder). Eagle countermark on a Mexico Real of inderterminat host, but based on the shape of the outline it appears to be the bust of Charles IIII (IV). The stamp is clear, though it is noted that the head faces right, rather than left. The noted details designation is due to many light scratches done long ago and now toned over matching the rest of the coin. The original host coin is worn slick as is commonly encountered with this issue and exhibits almost no recognizable details. Despite its shortcomings an interesting issue with a decent look certain to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. According to the SCWC as well as other major references on this subjuect these particular countermarks are thought to have been issued by General Vicente Guerrero, leader of the insurgents of the south, 1816-1821. However, due to the lack of contemporary documentation this is speculative.
