FRANCE. 1/3 Ecu, 1720-W. Lille Mint. Louis XV. PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield.
KM-455.18; Gad-306. Struck over a 1720-A Petit Louis d'argent (3 Livres[1/3 Ecu]) KM-455.1. Somewhat of a weak overstrike leaving much of the undertype visible with two bold dates, both 1720, and much of the legends. The undertype can be easily identified by a small lion on the obverse at 11 to the left of the original host date. An attractive example with light attractive mottled tone in the peripheries and signs of handling consistent for the grade. An interesting issue from a SCARCE mint sure to see spirited bidding from the specialist. Interesting to note that the original host was only issued until the end of September of that year using fresh planchets. The new types began being issued on 30 September 1720 and ceased production in 1723.
