★ A Classic 19th Century Gold Type ★
JAPAN. 20 Yen, Year 3 (1870). Mutsuhito (Meiji). NGC MS-64.
Fr-45; KM-Y-13; JNDA-01-1. A VERY RARE classic rarity of Japanese numismatics and the only collectible date of the type. Dragon within beaded circle, legend around; Reverse: Crossed military flags around national emblem. A sharply struck and well preserved example of this elusive issue displaying much originality. The natural brilliance of this piece shines through, though somewhat muted amongst the devices giving a truly organic appearance. A far superior example to the NGC MS-62 we sold in our Stack's Bowers and Ponterio April Hong Kong 2018 Auction lot # 52186 which realized an impressive $52,500 hammer (plus buyers premium). A lovely example with great eye appeal worthy of premium bid from the connoisseur of Japanese or large size gold coins.
