Obverse: CAROLVS D G SCOTIAE ANGLIAE FR ET HIB REX, crowned and draped bust left, wearing elaborate collar; Reverse: HINC NOSTRAE CREVERE ROSAE, thistle; in exergue in two lines, CORON 18 IVNII / 1633 B. A VERY RARE type in gold, this charming Briot issue, struck for the Scottish coronation of Charles, does exhibit some scattered marks and minor roughness, but is still one of the best examples of the type which one can possibly expect to encounter. Two years after the execution of Charles I, his son, Charles II, followed in his footsteps and was crowned in Scotland--a failed attempt at that time to regain the reins of power which the elder Charles had lost.
