CANADA. Dollar, 1949. Ottawa Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield.
KM-47. A premium example of this commemorative Dollar, possessing virtually perfect, highly mirrored surfaces that are mostly white with a few instances of tone, particularly along the obverse rims. Only four examples have been graded finer by PCGS in this SCARCE Specimen format. At is last public offering in 2013, this piece brought $4,112. Featuring a ship on its reverse, this single-year George VI type was struck to celebrate the founding of Newfoundland. This ship, named The Matthew, is credited for delivering explorer John Cabot from Bristol to the New World in 1497. Small for a seafaring vessel of the period, the voyage, which took over 50 days with stops in Ireland, is said to have had a crew of 18 men.
