Description

SICILY. Akragas. AR Tetradrachm (16.52 gms), ca. 465/0-445/0 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Scratches.
Westermark Group-II, 349 (O10/R35); SNG ANS-973 (same dies); HGC-2, 77. Obverse: Sea eagle standing left; Reverse: Crab, with carapace in the form of a human face; all within incuse circle. Deeply toned and enticing, this issue presents an interesting trompe l'oeil on the reverse--mainly in the shell of the crab, whereby a human face can be seen if one looks closely. Highly interesting and endlessly artistic.
Ex: Richard Sharf Collection (purchased from Harlan J. Berk, 9 February 1989).
Estimate: $1600.00- $2400.00
