1901-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS).
Blended pinkish-gold and light rose patina engages the viewer from highly lustrous, frosty textured surfaces. Double eagle production at the San Francisco Mint for 1901 was characteristically large at 1,596,000 pieces ($31,920,000 face value). In Mint State, Q. David Bowers (2004) provides a high end estimate for the issue of 9,000 or more pieces. This total, while not among the more generous for 20th century Liberty Head issues, is still sufficiently large to allow most collectors to acquire an attractive Uncirculated example, as here.
