1855 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-58 (PCGS).
A desirable near-Mint example with considerable satiny luster blooming from around the devices. Pale ivory-gold in hue with subtle traces of honey patina in the protected areas. By 1855, only the second year of production for this curious gold denomination, the unpopularity of the three-dollar gold piece in commercial channels had already become evident. As such, circulation strike production at the Philadelphia Mint that year dropped to 50,555 coins. Choice AU survivors like the present are considerably scarce.
